Hi There! This site is out of date. Please head over to: jwiggi18.github.io/ to see what I'm up to these days.
Together with teachers, we are designing resources to introduce students to the wealth of information and understanding presented in phylogenetic trees.
"The phylotastic project is creating tools to deliver custom species phylogenies in seconds rather than months." - Phylotastic Wiki
"just as beginning students in geography need to be taught how to read maps, so beginning students in biology should be taught how to read trees and to understand what trees communicate." - Robert O'Hara
The host site for 15 lesson plans and educational websites developed through classroom educator + researcher collaborations
addresses NGSS standards:
-
MS-History of Earth (ESS1-4, ESS2-3)
-
MS- Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity (LS4)
-
HS-LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity
We've developed an innovative way to develop educational resources and lesson plans through collaborations with classroom educators and active science researchers.
provides teachers with dynamically produced phylogenies to address NGSS standards:
-
Cross-cutting concept: scale proportion and quantity (using models to study systems that are too large or too small)
-
Science and Engineering Practices: Developing and using models
-
HS-LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity
The Evolution of the Horse will follow horse evolution across geologic time, linking natural selection, adaptations, and climactic and geographic changes. This application will address NGSS MS-History of Earth (ESS1-4, ESS2-3) and MS- Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity (LS4), MS- Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics (LS2-1), and HS- Biological Evolution and Heredity (LS4-6, HS-LS3-3).
